Tips for Combination Skin Types

A combination skin type is a texture of skin that is prone to be both dry and oily at once.  Combination skin types are quite common, and standard methods of cleansing and care that work on just dry or just oily skin types do not generally work for someone with combination skin.  Luckily, modern beauty methods have developed some great ways to care for combination skin types.  Here are some tips to help keep your skin looking healthy, happy, and vibrant.

Cut Out Soaps

Soaps are not the be all and end all of cleansing methods, especially with facial care.  Soap’s methods of clearing dirt and oil can severely dry up your skin and cause irritations - even on skin that is not especially sensitive.  Find a gentle cleanser with natural, soap-free ingredients to save your skin from the effects of soaps.

Use a Toner

Toner is essential for anyone who has a combination skin type.  It balances the pH of your skin after cleansing and helps your pores close up after they have just been opened.  In this way, the pores are first open to be cleaned out and then closed to keep dirt from clogging them.


It is not just dry skin types that need to be moisturized often.  A light moisturizer can hydrate dry areas of your skin while making oily areas mat and avoiding shine in problematically shiny areas.  Having a moisturizer with some sunscreen in it as well is always a good idea.  Sun damage is often overlooked in long term skin care, so by using a moisturizer that is also a sunscreen regularly, you can be sure all your bases are covered.

Bring in a Cleanser

When you wake up in the morning and need to wash away the oil of the night, or you are getting ready for bed and need to wash away the day’s dirt and makeup, use a gentle cleanser to ensure makeup, dirt, and oil never sits on your skin for too long.
