The health of your skin is intimately connected to the overall health of your body.  Your lifestyle has a significant impact on your skin’s appearance: what you eat and drink is often reflected in the quality and clarity of your skin, not to mention how much exercise you get or how often you sweat.

There are a lot of myths about exercise and keeping your skin clear­­ – for example, the idea that sweat clogs your pores is untrue! Sweating significantly at least once a day and rinsing afterwards is incredibly good for evening out the tone of your skin and helping to release toxins.  Think of it like your skin is cleansing itself from the inside out. 

What Yoga Can Do For You

Yoga is practiced by millions of people for its circulatory benefits, meaning it aids in stimulating blood flow and digestion.  The better your digestive system functions, the clearer your skin stays.  The better your blood flows through your body, the more beautifully your skin glows. 

If you have blemishes on your skin that you want to get rid of, increasing your blood circulation can be very helpful in promoting healing.  Yoga poses such as the child’s pose and shoulder stand are excellent at increasing blood flow all over the body – especially to the face and head. 

How to Help It Along

No regular exercise routine is complete without a supporting lifestyle change.  A healthy lifestyle does not stop and start at the yoga studio; it should be reflected in your everyday routine. Here are a few tips:

-          People say it all the time, but it is true: drink lots of water.  Drink more water than you feel you need.  This is because by the time your body actively feels thirsty, you are already on the way to being dehydrated.  Staying hydrated is a great way to make sure your skin stays hydrated too. 

-          Get enough rest.  When you do not get enough sleep it is reflected in the elasticity and colour quality of your skin.
