5 Superfoods to Improve Your Skin

We've all heard about superfoods, but sometimes it's unclear why we're supposed to eat them. What makes them so special? Well, read on for facts about five superfoods and what they can do for your skin!


Avocado

Antioxidants are key to anti-aging. These substances that prevent, or at least postpone, damage to cells. They fight reactive free radicals that can damage the DNA, proteins and cells in your body. Avocados are loaded with antioxidants, including beta-carotene, zeaxanthin and lutein.

Some of the vitamins in avocados have anti-aging properties, too. Vitamin C is necessary for the production of collagen and elastin. These structural proteins keep your skin looking firm, smooth and supple. Vitamin E is an antioxidant. It's particularly good at fighting sun damage.

Pomegranates

Like the avocado, this fruit is loaded with antioxidants. Polyphenols help prevent free radical damage. Anthocyanins, the compounds that give pomegranates their color, are also antioxidants.

Pomegranates are loaded with nutrients vital for your health, too. The arils and juice are a great source of folic acid, which is important in cell development; punicic acid, which reduces inflammation; and vitamins C and E, which have antioxidant properties.


Walnuts

Nuts are often overlooked in the American diet, but they are loaded with healthy fats. The Omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts help you retain moisture by supporting cell membrane health. These fats keep your complexion looking softer and more even in tone.

Walnuts also contain important essential minerals. The copper and manganese found in walnuts help increase collagen production. Manganese also works with antioxidant enzymes that prevent cell damage.


Chocolate

Chocolate is loaded with flavonols, which are powerful antioxidants. The darker the chocolate you eat, the more benefit you'll get from these compounds. Look for chocolate bars with high cacao percentages, in the 70% range, which provide more flavonols.

Flavonols help cells stay thick and supple. They provide some protection from dangerous UV rays. And they're not the only beneficial compound in chocolate. The naturally occurring caffeine helps reduce inflammation.


Green Tea

Green tea may be the most super of all. It is chock full of antioxidants and minerals that your body needs. Four separate catechins with antioxidant properties are found in green tea. EGCG, the most potent, decreases redness and inflammation in your complexion.

Other nutrients are found in green tea, too. Potassium, which helps your skin retain moisture, is one of them. Manganese, folate and caffeine, already discussed above, are found in green tea, too.
